You are here: Yorkshire Gold > Tourism

It’s not just the athletes, it’s the support teams and tourists who will flock to the UK as a result of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Lots and lots of tourists. Our job is to convince them that Yorkshire and Humber are great places to visit before, during and after the Games.

Enhanced Profile and Tourist Potential

We’ll face stiff competition from the UK’s other nations and regions. But with our classic English countryside, lively cities and rich cultural heritage, the region has some real advantages. Welcome to Yorkshire is already helping local businesses market themselves more effectively to rich new markets like China. And the case for Yorkshire as a base for Pre-Games Training Camps is being made all the time.

Perhaps most important of all, we’re stressing the need to communicate the region’s proximity to London. That Yorkshire is a convenient as well as a unique destination. So in less than three hours by train you can escape the crowds and hassle of the capital and be basking in warm Yorkshire hospitality.

The prize at the end of all this? Well, the attraction for the region’s hotels, restaurants and sites is obvious. But there is a longer view, too. Tourists are people. Some are business people. Some are parents looking for educational opportunities for their children. Others are skilled workers. People, in other words, who may visit as tourists but return again as investors, or customers, or new citizens. What’s more, by giving our people the confidence and skills needed to deal with visitors from all over the world, like improved language skills, we’re helping to make Yorkshire’s workforce more attractive to new business generally.

That’s why, in the run up to London 2012, we can say that everyone will get a better view of the Games through the culture of Yorkshire.
