Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders in Sport (SAYLS)

Education

The Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders in Sport (SAYLS) aims to use the power of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire young leaders to volunteer and lead in sport in schools and in the community.

The academy provides an opportunity for talented young sport leaders from across Sheffield, between 15 to 19 years, to develop their skills through participation in an extended programme of volunteering, leadership and training opportunities. In addition, SAYLS has Team Managers from Sheffield Hallam University, who play a key role in mentoring the young leaders.

Recently the project and participants were excited to meet Lord Seb Coe on his visit to Sheffield. He presented one of the inspiring young leaders, Holly Hodgkingson, with the Inspire Mark certificate at the EISS. The young leaders were at the forefront of the day’s event; leading on the various stations on the Athletics track, and supervising and mentoring on other activities in and around the English Institute of Sport, such as Wheelchair Basketball, Taekwondo and Table Tennis. They acted as great role models for the primary school children throughout the day and were a credit to the project, themselves and the city of Sheffield.

SAYLS leader Sarah Cross said “Being part of the inspire programme has enabled us to show what great work SAYLS is doing in the City. It has opened up more volunteer and leadership opportunities for these young leaders to get involved in.” Holly Hodgkinson (pictured in red) said: "The work I have been involved in with London 2012 has given me the drive to spread the enthusiasm of the Games into local primary schools through my coaching"
