Friday Football Super Academies

Sport

This innovative project brings together young people from different estates across the local authority to participate in football across the area to look at reducing levels of crime and anti social behaviour. The Sport Lincs project was set up in response to consultation with young people also to reduce high levels of crime and anti social behaviour among young people aged 11 to 19 in the North East Lincolnshire Area. This has been a success, with increasing participation on a Friday nights, and a drop in the levels of crime and anti social behaviour on the evenings that sessions were held.In addition, the project has linked with partners such as the Humberside Police, Public Health Service and Humberside Fire Service to provide workshops, awareness training or link into their targeted interventions aimed at this age group, in a less formal environment than a school.

Using the London 2012 ambition of making sport accessible to all as a key driver in the project, it has opened up the project to education and training, as opposed to just football, and also opened it up to girls as well as boys. This means that Friday nights are now seen as an opportunity for young people to come together and take part in sport and physical activity, while having a social impact of reducing crime and anti social behaviour at the same time.

The scheme has helped not only tackle crime and anti social behaviour, but has also contributed positively to improving community cohesion in an area which has a very diverse ethnic mix.
