Sport
Back to Sport (B2S) is a new programme that aims to harness the excitement and interest in London 2012 to drive participation with council workers in Sheffield.
Departments within Sheffield City Council enter the Games and participate in four selected sports. A competition day for each sport will take place at the end of each month from June to September 2010. Each department entered must hold a minimum of four training sessions before the competition day. This will ensure that the Games are not a one off event and people will participate before the event, experience a friendly competition then ideally continue on the participation pathway following the Games.
This pathway will involve a combination of local sports clubs and where possible input from National Governing Bodies (NGB’s). The B2S Games are very much aimed at people with little or no current levels of physical activity. In a relaxed and friendly environment, the B2S programme aims to be the catalyst for people to increase their physical activity levels and continue to participate on a regular basis after the Games.
Whilst the event targets people 30 years plus, young leaders will be heavily involved in the competition days of the event. They will undertake various roles including officiating, assisting with the general running of the event, scoring and time keeping.
This year’s inaugural event took place on the 27 June 2010 with the last competition day taking place at the end of September. It is the first event of its kind in Yorkshire to be recognised by the Inspire programme and organisers hope that strengthening the connection to London 2012 will help raise the profile of the project and encourage more people to take part.
